The Supreme Court on Friday issued notices to the Centre and the Delhi police for a probe by a special investigation team into the contents of a sting operation conducted by two television channels exposing the role of three lawyers in the assault of JNU student leader Kanhaiya Kumar when he was produced in the Patiala House courts on February 17.

A bench of Justices J. Chelameswar and A,M. Sapre, while deciding to examine the writ petition filed by advocate Kamini Jaiswal, also issued notices to lawyers Vikram Singh Chouhan, Yashpal Singh and O.P. Sharma asking why contempt of court proceedings should not be initiated against them for “bragging” about assault on the JNU student.

Initially, the bench was not inclined to entertain the petition as it pointed out that the court was dealing with the matter in the writ petition filed by N.D. Jayaprakash, JNU alumnus seeking access to justice and it is coming up for hearing on March 10. However, counsel Prashant Bhushan submitted that there was no harm in hearing this petition too.

The petition said the three lawyers have been shown saying that they had beaten up Mr Kumar for three hours in the presence of the police personnel.
