A 46-year-old married woman, Lalita Devi, was stabbed to death with a pair of scissors in public in east Delhi’s Gandhi Nagar on Wednesday morning.

A 46-year-old married woman, Lalita Devi, was stabbed to death with a pair of scissors in public in east Delhi’s Gandhi Nagar on Wednesday morning.

She was allegedly murdered by her neighbour, who was frustrated that she was not responding to his advances. The murder took place around 10 am in a lane near the woman’s home at Multani Mohalla, close to Pushta Road in Gandhi Nagar. The attacker was caught by a mob as he attempted to flee after attacking the woman, the police said.

A senior police officer said the woman was stabbed as many as six times with the pair of scissors on chest and back by her neighbour, Rakesh alias Dabbu, a bachelor, while she was walking towards the main road to board a bus. Lalita worked in a private company and was heading to her workplace when the crime occurred.

Lalita, the police officer said, lived with her husband, Ramesh Bhatia, and other family members in Multani Mohalla. The couple has a 15-year-old daughter who lives at her aunt’s home. Since Ram-esh is mentally-disabled and does not work, it was Lalita who was working to make ends meet for her family members.

On Wednesday, Lalita left home for work and was walking in the lane towards the main road when Rakesh followed her and asked her to stop. Eyewitnesses told the police that the two had an argument over some issue during which Rakesh took out a pair of scissors and repeatedly attacked Lalita.
