A 17-year-old girl’s throat was slit by her spurned lover in public while she was walking around on Sunday afternoon in her neighbourhood in East Delhi’s Pandav Nagar area. She is battling for her life at a hospital.

The girl lives with her family in the Yamuna floodplains of Yamuna Khadar. The 20-year-old accused lives a few huts away. The two of them were involved in a relationship until sometime ago, according to Rishi Pal, DCP (East).

The problem began when the girl severed her relationship with him as she had found him too intrusive. She was ignoring him for the past few days and had refused to take his phone calls, leaving him seething with anger.

The attack on the girl took place while she walking outside her home around 4.30 pm on Sunday. Her parents were away at work at that time.

The accused had seen the girl alone and took it as an opportunity to approach her. Initially, he tried to converse with her, but she refused to talk to him. Infuriated over her refusal to talk to him, the man suddenly held the victim’s hand. “The girl pulled her hand back and warned him to keep away. She also threatened to reveal his advances to her parents,” said a senior police officer.

Seeing the situation spiral out of his control, the man left her and stepped back from her. However, within seconds, he produced a blade from his pocket and slit the girl’s throat, causing her to collapse on the road.

Some locals, who were standing nearby, immediately rushed to the girl’s aid. The assailant used the commotion as an opportunity to flee, but was chased and caught immediately.

The police has registered a case of attempt to murder against the accused and has arrested him. “We are questioning the family members of both the families to know if the girl was being harassed in the past too,” said the DCP. The police said that the victim’s condition is stable for now.
