A 22-year-old man, Deepak, was crushed to death on Monday at around 6.30 am by a speeding water tanker near South Delhi’s Lado Sarai area.

Apart from crushing the youth, the tanker also rammed into a police picket and cars nearby. Witnesses confirmed that the tanker started speeding towards the divider— breaking it partially — and headed towards the wall across the road. It got over the footpath, after which its left tyre came off. It toppled over on the left side where Deepak was riding his scooty. “It seemed like he already sensed his impending misfortune as he ducked and started moving away from the tanker when it was toppling. Before we could run for help, the damage was caused and Deepak had already been crushed,” a witness said.

Two cranes were called to pull his body out. The owner of the tanker, Kawar, whose number was written on the water tanker, was called and informed of the accident.

Driver Bhagwan Singh fled from the spot even as locals gathered in large numbers. However, he was eventually arrested. The police is yet to establish whether Singh was drunk or had fallen asleep at the wheel, as he rammed the tanker into the wall and crushed the youth. After the accident, cops from the Mehrauli police station reached the spot and sent Deepak’s body for a post-mortem.

The tanker could have caused more destruction had there been more cars and people around, the cops added.
