A 54-year-old Delhi police head constable was allegedly knocked down by a teenage driver in an accident near Welcome T-point in northeast Delhi on Sunday morning.
The victim’s two-wheeler was hit from back by the errant driver, who does not have a driving licence. The incident took place around 8.30 am when the deceased head constable, Naresh Pal Malik, was on his way to work on his scooter, deputy commissioner of police (northeast) A.K. Singla said.
Malik, a resident of Ghaziabad, had reached close to Welcome Metro station when the car hit his scooter from behind and he lost his balance and fell on the road. Locals reported the matter to the police.
Malik was rushed to the Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital where he was declared brought dead, said the police, adding that the victim had sustained severe head injuries.
Eyewitnesses chased the accused driver, 18-year-old Shubham, caught him and handed him over to the police. The owner of the vehicle, the father of one of Shubham’s friends, was also sitting in the car at the time of the accident, said Mr Singla.
“We have booked Shubham for causing death by negligence and for rash and negligent driving. He disclosed that he had turned 18 recently, but does not have a driving licence issued yet. We have also booked his co-passenger for allowing a minor to drive,” said Mr Singla, adding that prima facie it does not make for culpable homicide (not amounting to murder) as seen in certain fatal accidents this year.
The head constable, a resident of Surya Vihar in Ghaziabad, worked for the Delhi police since 1982. He was currently posted at the special branch.
Malik is the second policeman to be killed in the last three days after Anand Singh, another constable, was shot dead in Outer Delhi on Friday.
