Special wards must to fight dengue: Vijender Gupta

Expressing serious concern about dengue patients having been admitted to various hospitals in Delhi, Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly Vijender Gupta demanded that the chief minister and city’s health minister should immediately organise special wards for dengue patients in government hospitals.

As per government statistics, a total of 15,876 dengue patients were admitted to hospitals last year and 60 of those patients had died.

However, according to non-governmental figures, the number of patients admitted to the hospitals was more than 1,00,000. Due to non-availability of beds and unaffordable treatment, the dengue patients were turned away just by giving them medicines for fever, thereby reducing the govt figures for admission to only 15,876 patients.

Mr Gupta said that the situation this year is likely to be more serious as there may be more dengue spreading mosquitoes due to more than normal rain expected in July and August. Therefore, the Delhi government should make preparations to save Delhiites from the lethal disease. As per non-governmental statistics, hundreds had died due to dengue last year and majority of those who had died were main salary earners of poor families. These families have become orphaned after their deaths. The Delhi government has provided no assistance to these families so far, the BJP MLA claimed.

Mr Gupta said chief minister Arvind Kejriwal had promised in October 2015, after the number of dengue patients went up, that he will arrange genetically-modified anti-dengue mosquitoes from China and these will be released in Delhi. These genetically-modified mosquitoes are yet to arrive from China, he said.
