With Diwali just around the corner and marketplaces all decked up, elaborate security arrangements have been thrown to ensure peaceful festivities.

In a meeting, security arrangements in the city were reviewed by the top brass. Counterparts in neighbouring states were also informed to take adequate measures on their part, a senior police official said.

Delhi police’s top brass is continuously monitoring situation at vulnerable spots. Senior district officials have also been asked to leave their offices and conduct checks in busy places to keep a vigil.

A senior Delhi police officer, on condition of anonymity, said: “All SHOs have been directed to depute extra personnel at busy places, like markets, railway stations, malls, in their jurisdictions.”

“Security drills are being conducted to check the response preparedness of the officials as well,” he added.

Besides, the police said, meetings with members of Residents Welfare Associations (RWAs), market associations and other stakeholders are being held on routine basis. “We are briefing shopkeepers and the market staff on potential security threats and have asked them to be vigilant,” said the senior police officer, adding, “parking attendants are also being lectured about possible threats and are being told about their response in case they see any untoward activity in their vicinity.”

Senior Delhi police officers added that all SHOs have been specifically asked to visit vulnerable locations in their areas and ensure that everything is in order.

The police sources said that anti-terrorism unit of the Delhi police, special cell, has also been roped-in. “We are continuing to have meetings with them so that any intelligence threat inputs can be shared immediately,” said the sources.

Traffic situation, however, remained bad with several roads witnessing snarls running into hours.
