Schools get time till September 30 to roll back fee hike

After checking the accounts of 110 private schools, the Delhi government said that they have no reason to demand a fee hike.

Earlier this year, the government had sought online proposals for fee increase from the private schools set up on the Delhi Development Authority land, which was allotted to them on the ground that they would obtain prior sanction from the directorate before increasing their fees. Nearly 450 private schools are built on the land allotted by the Central land-owning agency.

According to the directorate of education (DoE), 166 private unaided schools submitted their online proposal until August 22. In a circular issued last week, the directorate said that inspection of 110 schools has already been started. Five schools withdrew their fee hike proposal, the circular said. Unyielding to demands of allowing fees hike by schools, the DoE said that after “detailed understanding of accounting procedures and examination of their own fund positions and fee reserves,” it has come to a “conclusion that they have no need for fee increase in the current academic session i.e. 2016-17.” It further said that the schools have time until September 30 to withdraw their proposal for fee hike.

After withdrawing the proposal, the schools shall under no circumstances charge the increased fee, the directorate said and added that in case, enhanced fee has already been charged, it shall be refunded immediately.

In its order earlier this month, the DoE had directed the schools “to keep all records and books of accounts open for examination and scrutiny by the chartered accountants in accordance with the sub-rule (3) of rule 180 of the Delhi School Education Rules, 1973.”
