A diplomat from the Russian embassy was booked for allegedly hitting a biker with his speeding car before ramming into a barricade in South Delhi’s Moti Bagh area late Tuesday night. He also allegedly assaulted a cop, said the police.
The police said that a case of rash driving, obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions, assaulting public servant and causing grievous injury has been registered in connection with the incident, which was reported around 1.30 am, but no one has been named in the FIR, said joint commissioner of police (southwest) Dependra Pathak.
“We have ascertained the diplomat’s identity, but it is to be confirmed, for which we have written to the ministry of home affairs, requesting them to forward the matter to the ministry of external affairs and get the diplomat’s name and position verified for further probe into the matter,” Mr Pathak said.
The police have also provided the image of the diplomat, obtained from CCTV footage, to the ministry for the verification process. They are presently awaiting the ministry’s response, a senior official said.
The diplomat, who was suspected to be driving in an inebriated state, lost control of the vehicle and hit the rear side of a motorbike, the police claimed.
The biker, identified as Naveen, sustained injuries and was later rushed to the AIIMS Trauma Centre.
The diplomat then rammed his vehicle into a police barricade in the area and refused to come out of the car, bearing a registration number pertaining to the Russian embassy, said the police.
When the officials finally managed to pull the diplomat out of the vehicle, it emerged that the diplomat was injured too. He later started arguing with the police and allegedly assaulted a constable who was on duty, said a police official.
The matter was communicated to the senior police officers and the concerned embassy was also informed through proper channels. A person was sent to escort the diplomat back to his residence after basic medical treatment, the police said. Whether the diplomat was drunk can only be ascertained when the result of the medical examination is obtained, the police added. Further investigations are on.
