Former chief of The Energy and Resources Institute R.K. Pachauri, who is facing a court trial for allegedly sexually harassing one of his former colleagues, was on Monday granted bail by a Delhi court and allowed to travel abroad.
Dr Pachauri, who appeared before metropolitan magistrate Shivani Chauhan pursuant to the summons issued against him, was allowed by the court to travel to Mexico for conferences spanning a month.
Dr Pachuri had moved pleas before the court seeking its permission to travel abroad and also for his bail. The court after hearing to his submission allowed his pleas. The court asked him to furnish a bail bond of Rs 50,000 and a surety of like amount.
“The investigation is complete. Chargesheet has already been filed. He was never arrested, which goes on to show that his custody is not required for the purpose of investigation. No fruitful result would be served by sending him to jail,” the court noted, adding, “The accused has been granted permission to travel abroad on several earlier occasions and has complied with the directions given by the court. In these circumstances, the accused is permitted to travel as per his itinerary subject to furnishing of one local surety of Rs 2 lakh.” Dr Pachauri was also asked to file a copy of his travel tickets.
