‘Rise in rape cases under BJP regime’

Congress leader Sharmishta Mukherjee, who is daughter of President Pranab Mukherjee, attacked the BJP-led Central government on Sunday claiming that after the party assumed power, crimes against women

Congress leader Sharmishta Mukherjee, who is daughter of President Pranab Mukherjee, attacked the BJP-led Central government on Sunday claiming that after the party assumed power, crimes against women had gone up manifold, and that Delhi was now being known as the “rape capital” of the country, with the Delhi police remaining “mute spectators.”

Addressing a public meeting for Congress candidate from the Uttam Nagar Assembly constituency Mukesh Sharma, Ms Mukherjee said the law and order situation in Delhi had gone completely out of control, and the Union home minister was keeping a “studied silence.” “Compared to last year, there was 100 per cent increase in crimes against women,” she claimed.

Launching a direct attack on the BJP and the AAP, she asked where were the parties now who had taken out candlelight marches at India Gate and Jantar Mantar following the Nirbhaya incident, despite many rape cases in Delhi. She said that there was a rapist-minister and father of a rapist in the BJP-led Central government, and questioned whether this was the manner in which the BJP was trying to protect the honour of women. “The BJP slogan was, ‘Bahut hua naari par athyachar a bki bar Modi sarkar,’ but now the BJP slogan would be ‘Roz hoga naari par athyachar phir bhi paanch saal rahegi Modi sarkar’.”

Congress national spokesperson Sanjay Nirupam lauded four-time MLA Mukesh Sharma’s “all-round development of Uttam Nagar,” and said that he had always looked after his constituency. He said that during its 15-year rule, the Congress government had implemented many schemes for the welfare of the people from Poorvanchal, but Mr Sharma was the only MLA who had built a Chhat Park and Chhat Ghat in his constituency with the aid of the government.

Holding the BJP responsible for the mounting price rise, the Congress leaders alleged that even in winter, the prices of peas and carrots had hit the roof, and asked whether the BJP leaders, who had distributed onions when they were in the Opposition, were not aware of the steep rise in the prices of vegetables.
