Realtor beaten to death, family rivalry suspected
In a case of suspected long-standing rivalry between two branches of a family, a 55-year-old businessman was beaten to death allegedly by his two cousins and their aides in front of his wife in southwest Delhi’s Chhawla.
The police said that the incident took place the couple had gone for a morning walk at around 6 am on Thursday. The victim, a property dealer, was walking with his wife near his house at Nanak Hera village in Chhawla when a car allegedly hit him, the police said on Friday.
Another car approached them and occupants of both the vehicles got off and allegedly started thrashing Kumar with rods. As he collapsed, the accused crushed Kumar’s head with a heavy object and fled. “The victim, identified as Ramesh Kumar, was beaten up with rods and iron sticks by the group. The assailants fled the spot after the victim stared bleeding profusely. Kumar suffered severe injuries,” the police said.
The deceased owned a real estate firm in Gurgaon. “When Kumar was being assaulted, his wife rushed home to inform family members and neighbours. But by the time they could reach the crime scene the assailants had fled,” the police said.
Kumar’s wife called up the police and reported the matter. The victim was taken to hospital where he was declared brought dead.
The police suspects Kumar’s murder is linked to a long-standing rivalry between the two branches of a family. The grandfathers of the victim and the prime accused were brothers, who turned into rivals years ago over some issue. One of Kumar’s sons was murdered last year, following which one member of the rival family branch and three others were arrested, while another is currently lodged at a jail in Haryana.
Around two years ago, Kumar’s son had thrashed a youth of the rival branch after which the latter had committed suicide.
Two persons have been arrested in connection with the case. The police has registered a case of murder and started investigation. “We are conducting raids to nab the absconding suspects, cousins of the deceased,” the police said.
As many as six other suspects are believed to be absconding and efforts are on to nab them, DCP (southwest) Surendra Kumar said.
