Aiming to make South Delhi localities clean, green and free of garbage and pollution, Union home minister Rajnath Singh launched integrated garbage management and disposal system of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation on Wednesday.
Appreciating efforts of the SDMC in developing and putting in place an integrated system for collection and transportation of garbage to be taken to the landfill sites or for recycling, Mr Singh said with improvement in cleaning and sanitation in the area, Delhi’s attraction will become more forceful for the citizens of the country and foreigners.
Referring to the Swachchh Bharat Abhiyan launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Mr Singh said the SDMC system is being launched in continuation of that mission.
For new integrated garbage management and disposal system, the SDMC has constituted an special purpose public non-governmental firm called the Dakshin Dilli Swachchh Initiatives Limited. The new SPV has responsibility of collecting and transporting more than 700 tonnes of garbage from more than 20 lakh residents in the central zone.
The garbage will also include dust generated from the sweeping of roads, garbage from hotels and restaurants and silt taken out from drains, apart from green waste. The collection will be daily in residential colonies and commercial establishments, including markets. The new system will benefit the central zone localities spread over an area of 100 square kilometres — starting from Daryaganj to Badarpur.
The garbage will also be recycled. The collected garbage will also be taken to landfill site in a systematic manner. The entire system will be able to establish a reliable mechanism of door-to-door and source-to-source collection of garbage.
