The Delhi government on Wednesday ordered a magisterial probe into the alleged suicide of an AAP activist, identified as Soni, who lived with her two daughters and other family members in outer Delhi’s Narela. The woman had consumed poison at her home and died during treatment at L.N.J.P. Hospital on Tuesday.
Deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia said the North Delhi magistrate will conduct the investigation into her death. “Have ordered magistrate inquiry in the AAP activist suicide case in Narela. DM north will do the inquiry,” he said in a tweet.
Soni’s family alleged that her complaints of sexual harassment against party colleague, Ramesh Wadhwa, were overlooked by the AAP leaders. However, the party insists that the accused is not a member of the AAP.
Earlier in June, the police had registered a case of molestation against Soni’s party colleague. Her family members told the police that Soni had slipped into depression after the accused was released on bail.
They said the accused was being sheltered by local MLA Sharad Chauhan, but the AAP has refuted these allegations.
Before consuming a poisonous substance, the woman sent out a message on a WhatsApp group that includes other AAP volunteers, said the police. “I am leaving my body because I failed to get the justice.”
Her message was in Hindi. One of her colleagues after reading the messages reached the hospital.
A senior police official said the FIR which was registered in the very beginning was taken well into consideration and the accused was arrested and sent to jail.
The second FIR was registered on the basis of the statement given by the victim to her colleagues and also considering the message shared on the social media under Section 306 of IPC. No particular names were revealed in the message shared by the victim. As the AAP workers have been involved in this case, it has been transferred to the crime branch for further investigation.
“V sad case of Soni suicide. DCW counselor met SHO ACP n got her FIR filed. Court gv bail to accused. We demand strictest action in this case,” Delhi Commission for Women chief Swati Maliwal said in a tweet.
“Suicide case increasing. Many get depressed during battle for justice. DCW to set up sp counselling centre for women dealing with depression,” she said.
