Even as Delhi police Commissioner Bhim Sain Bassi on Wednesday said that there were enough evidences against JNU Students’ Union president Kanhaiya Kumar, the police would not oppose his bail application. Mr Bassi said this after Kanhaiya was remanded to judicial custody till March 2 by the Patiala House Court. The Commissioner also said that there have evidences against the people who were not from JNU and were involved in the incident.

“We have enough evidence against Kanhaiya and the people who were not JNU students but were shouting anti-India slogans,” he said coming out of the PMO.

Mr Bassi also refused that Kanhaiya was beaten up inside the court premises while he was being produced before metropolitan magistrate Lovleen. He said the police had made all the arrangements to avoid any untoward incidents and claimed that no unfortunate incidents took place inside or outside the court premises. Mr Bassi said a team of special police officials of south district had escorted Kanhaiya and he was well taken care of.

“I don’t think you say that the situation went out of hand, I don’t think he (Kanhaiya) was beaten up. My information is that there was jostling when he was brought to court in which he lost one of his slippers,” he said.

He added that the police were covering Kanhaiya from front and behind and did not let anyone come near him, adding that the police did not want to use force. “During jostling, our officers were covering him (Kanhaiya) from behind and front with intention of protecting him from assault. Our tactic was not to use force because if we had used force, that could have been counter-productive,” he said.

He also said that Kanhaiya had issued a statement before he was taken to the court in which he had said that he was not shouting anti-India slogans and had full faith in Indian constitution.

The objective of the statement, the Commissioner said, was to tell the other JNU students not to indulge in such activities and that it was not the right path.

“I have told the government counsel to tell the Supreme Court that Kanhaiya before appearing in the Patiala House Court has made the appeal. DCP (South) is releasing the statement on twitter for wider reach,” said Bassi.

But in view of his appeal to his brethren in JNU not to indulge in anti-national activities and his expression of faith in Constitution and judiciary, he said they would not oppose his bail if he applied for it. Asked whether he was giving a clean chit to Kumar, Bassi said that he was not giving a clean chit.

Bassi said summons have been issued to three lawyers and BJP MLA OP Sharma in connection with assault on journalists on Monday.

Faced with mounting criticism for slapping sedition charges on JNUSU leader Kanhaiya Kumar, Bassi earlier asserted there was “adequate evidence” against him.

“We have adequate evidence against him,” Bassi told reporters while emerging from the PMO.

Bassi was asked about reports citing inputs from security agencies that Kumar may not have raised anti-national slogans or made an inflammatory speech at the JNU event, which is at the centre of a raging controversy.

He said he had come to the PMO to invite some officials for the “At Home” programme being hosted by him in the evening.
