Police files case against Anand Sharma’s ‘attackers’

A day after senior deputy leader of the Congress in the Rajya Sabha Anand Sharma was allegedly beaten up by a group of ABVP workers at the JNU campus, the Delhi police said it has registered a case in this connection with the local police station.

The police also said that it was trying to identity the assailants who allegedly thrashed Mr Sharma. A senior police official said that it has lodged a case under Sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 341 (wrongful restraint) of the Indian Penal Code against unknown persons.

The FIR was registered on the basis of a complaint by Mr Sharma’s personal security officer (PSO), following which the seniormost police officials of the district went to meet the former Union minister at his residence.

“A team has been formed and it is collecting eviden-ce, including video clips. We are trying to ascertain the identity of the accused as soon as possible,” the senior official added.

Mr Sharma had alleged that he was attacked by ABVP activists at the JNU campus when he was returning with Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi after attending a protest meeting by students there on Saturday evening.

Sources said he was attacked on the ears with a sharp object.
