MRA Marg police on Saturday arrested a notorious conman, who has more than 20 cases registered against him at different police stations in Mumbai, when he was trying to flee after an alleged robbery at a bank.
According to police officials, the accused Sameer Sayyed (43), on Saturday entered the Central Bank of India main branch near Fort, CST around 12 pm. Within half-an-hour he saw a person getting ready to deposit Rs 22 lakh in the bank. The accused approached the person and offered to help in counting the cash. The victim found his behaviour suspicious and declined to take help from the accused. But when the victim placed the bundles of currency notes on the cash counter desk, the accused snatched two bundles worth Rs 2.5 lakh and fled the place by pushing and beating the watchman of the bank.
MRA Marg police station senior PI, Sukhlal Varpe, said, “He was running from the bank when one of our API, Sandip Sawant, saw chaos near the bank and a man running with cash. API Sawant was going to court for some official work. He immediately asked his driver to chase the accused. Then they stopped the car in front of him and arrested him immediately. The accused is a resident of Thane city. We are checking with every police station in the state about his previous records. Within a day we came to know that there are over 21 cases registered against the accused in last two years at different police stations in Mumbai.”
