Delhi University’s image is taking a hit due to the row over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s degree, deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia said on Thursday, and suggested a “joint inspection” of documents with the varsity’s vice-chancellor Yogesh Tyagi as the “best solution”.
In a letter to Prof. Tyagi, Mr Sisodia accused the DU authorities of “hiding facts” and said the Delhi government wants to see an end to the controversy, which is sending a “wrong message and sowing seeds of doubt among students and teachers”.
Mr Sisodia urged Prof. Tyagi to write to Mr Modi and seek his permission for making his B.A. degree public. “I believe the PM will not object to it,” the deputy chief minister said.
Meanwhile, Prof. Tyagi denied the allegations made by the AAP of authenticating Mr Modi’s degree due to pressure from the Centre. However, while refusing to be influenced by any political pressure, Prof. Tyagi asserted that the university is progressing in accordance with the law.
“A few AAP leaders visited the university yesterday and met V-C Yogesh Tyagi over the issue of Mr Modi’s degree. The V-C told them that the RTI cell of the university will act in accordance with the law, but it is incorrect to say that the university is acting under any political pressure,” DU registrar Tarun Das said.
The clarification by DU comes a day after an AAP delegation visited the university demanding that they should be allowed to examine the records of Mr Modi’s B.A. degree, but they had to return empty handed.
