City lieutenant-governor Najeeb Jung on Monday urged students to open up their minds and let free thoughts and knowledge inside so that they become free thinkers.
Speaking at the centenary year celebrations of Ramjas College, he also asked them to remember their commitment towards the country and strive to help poorest of the poor in the society. “Each one of you is extremely privileged to have very decent facilities and good teachers. So, it’s absolutely incumbent on you to remember your commitment to the country. If you can bring smile to the poorest of our country then that would be a life worth living,” Mr Jung said, quoting Mahatma Gandhi.
Ramjas College, one of the oldest colleges of the Delhi University, was founded in 1917 by Rai Kedar Nath in the memory of his father Lala Ramjas Mal. An alumnus of the college and retired Supreme Court judge, Justice Mukundkam Sharma, remembered his days at the college in 1960s while highlighting that the college has gone from strength to strength since it was set up.
In his address, the Ramjas principal, Dr Rajendra Prasad, highlighted the glorious past and lows faced by the institution during his 31 years at the helm. “Going forward from the centennial year, we wish to pave a path uncharted by others. We believe we live in a transformational moment in the nation’s life cycle and we wish to make this college locus of new ideas promoting student driven and research based initiatives,” said Dr Prasad, the longest-serving college principal in the country.
Member of the governing body of the college and former Assocham chairman Anil Agarwal also addressed the gathering. The guests also hoisted the college flag and unveiled the centennial logo for the Ramjas College.
