In one of the biggest recoveries of cocaine here, 310 gm of the contraband with street value of Rs 3.5 crore was seized from a Nigerian national by the narcotics cell of the crime branch on Sunday.
“Acting on a tip-off about the supply of cocaine in Delhi and nearby areas by a man called Okpala James, 28, a narcotics cell team nabbed him near a bus stand close to New Delhi Railway Station on July 10,” said Ravindra Yadav, joint commissioner (crime) of police.
The accused was carrying 310 gm of fine quality cocaine. “It is the biggest catch of the drug by the crime branch’s narcotics cell,” Mr Yadav said.
James had first come to India in April 2015 on a medical visa and during that visit he met a fellow Nigerian, Chi Chi B, who lured him into joining the smuggling racket. James came back to India in June 2015 and joined the drug trafficking gang, the official said. Besides Chi Chi B, the accused was also in contact with another Nigerian national, who is a big player in the illegal cocaine trade and is said to have supplied the contraband to James, Mr Yadav said. The police has also recovered several mobile phones from James.
