NGT to govt: Find ways to avoid traffic jams in South Delhi

The National Green Tribunal on Tuesday directed the Delhi government and the police to inspect Panchsh-eel Park in South Delhi and find ways to avoid massive traffic congestion in the area.

The National Green Tribunal on Tuesday directed the Delhi government and the police to inspect Panchsh-eel Park in South Delhi and find ways to avoid massive traffic congestion in the area.

A bench headed by NGT chairperson Justice Swata-nter Kumar pulled up the Delhi government and the civic bodies, including the DDA and municipal corporation, for not devising an effective plan to decongest the area.

“Have you ever thought of the reason why there is traffic congestion in the area and how to solve it It (road) is congested 24 hours. Issuing challans is not a solution for the problem. Take commissioner of police, joint commissioner of police (traffic), secretary of Delhi’s transport department and an official from the DDA for inspection. Spend two hours there and then tell us how can you solve the problem,” the bench said while posting the matter for further hearing on December 10.

When the counsel for the Delhi government sought a written order, the bench said, “Why do you need orders even for getting up from your chairs.”

The directions came during the hearing of a petition filed by Omesh Saigal, a resident of Panchsheel Park, who alleged that noise pollution, generated due to heavy traffic flow on Outer Ring Road, was affecting the health of the people living in the area.
