New Delhi cops told to stay put at night

Days after southeast district deputy commissioner of police M.S.

Days after southeast district deputy commissioner of police M.S. Randhawa restrained the upper subordinate ranks from going to their homes all seven days a week without prior permission from their seniors, DCP New Delhi district Jatin Narwal followed suit and issued a similar diktat on November 18.

In the order, he stated: “It has come to notice that upper subordinates posted at police stations of New Delhi district leave their place of duty during night for their residence without prior permission of the concerned ACP, which causes lot of inconvenience and embarrassment wherever an updation is required on a particular case/complaint assigned to him or any call pending with them or any unscheduled law and order arrangement takes place.”

“It is desired, henceforth, all the upper subordinates shall remain present in their respective police stations and shall only be permitted to avail one night off in a week and that too with prior written approval of the ACP/SDPO concerned. Violation shall be viewed seriously,” it added.

Even as senior officers are expecting that the new directions would yield better results, officers who fall under this category think it is like imposing a diktat.

An ASI posted in the southeast district said on condition of anonymity: “From the very contents of this order it looks like a diktat,” adding, “How is it possible for any working human being to not go to their homes for a week ”
