NDMC attaches properties of tax defaulters
Acting tough against property tax defaulters, the North Delhi Municipal Corporation attached and took possession of around 450 properties for failing to pay property tax dues in the last financial year.
The civic body has also formed dedicated teams to recover all outstanding dues of transfer duty.
NDMC commissioner Praveen Gupta said that the corporation had attached more than 350 properties in the 2015-16 financial year and more than 80 properties in the current financial year.
Mr Gupta informed that more than 125 commercial complexes were surveyed in NDMC’s jurisdiction and in almost all cases, due transfer duty had not been paid, causing financial losses to the corporation. “Dedicated teams have been formed to take necessary action under the DMC Act to recover all transfer duty or stamp duty dues. The survey was conducted in Gulabi Bagh, New Sabzi Mandi, Netaji Subhash Place, Paschim Vihar, Pitam Pura, Rohini Sector-3, Sector-11 and Rani Bagh among other,” he added.
He said it had been noticed that some builders had made a practice of selling commercial units without paying stamp duties.
Transfer duty is levied in the form of surcharge on stamp duty at the rate of not exceeding five per cent of the amount specified under Section 147 (2) (b) of DMC Act. The transfer duty (the surcharge of stamp duty on transfer of property) has been fixed at three per cent for men and two per cent for women of the amount specified under Section 147 (2) (b) of the Act.
Transfer duty must be paid in cases of sale of immovable property (such as sale deed) and also any contract for transfer of immovable property (which will include Builder-Buyer Agreement to sell / allotment property or otherwise and other such contracts / agreement to transfer property.
“All such builders, promoters and individuals are advised to duly pay the tax due to the Corporation. The tax collected contributes to the development and provision of civic services. If due tax is not paid to the Corporation, stern action will be initiated against defaulters for which dedicated teams have already been constituted,” he said.
