In order to arm mohalla sabhas with more powers, the AAP government is in the process of empowering them to handle complaints against liquor shops across the national capital.
The Kejriwal government is also planning to vest powers with the mohalla sabhas to take a call on the opening of new liquor shops in their respective areas. Not only this, the AAP government is also planning to give powers to these sabhas to decide whether the existing shops should be relocated in their respective areas. While the AAP government is yet to announce its new excise policy, there are clear indications that the new policy will be almost the same as the existing one. On the recent allegations that 58 new liquor shops have been opened in the last one-and-a-half years, a senior officer said 37 such shops had been issued licences by mall owners and 17 others had been relocated in their respective areas. The official said only six new liquor shops had been given fresh licences under the AAP regime.
Of the 3,000 mohalla sabhas that the Kejriwal government plans to constitute in Delhi, about 1,100-odd sabhas have already become functional. Earlier, the city government had approved opening of 110 mohalla clinics in the government-run-schools in the national capital. The clinics were to be opened after getting due inputs from the mohalla sabhas. The clinics will not only treat sick students in school premises, but would also have a separate entry for general public. The mohalla clinics will be run in porta cabins, having a sick room facility for schoolchildren. The decision to this effect was taken at a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday.
Chief minister Arvind Kejriwal had directed the health department to expedite the process for setting up these clinics.
