A high-voltage drama unfolded at south Delhi’s Jamia Nagar police station on Sunday afternoon after Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Okhla MLA Amanatullah Khan, accompanied by over hundred supporters, appeared before the police to surrender.
However, the police citing ongoing investigation refused to arrest the MLA on Sunday. A senior police official said that they have taken adequate step as per the law. They have neither asked him (the MLA) to join the probe nor surrender. It was Mr Khan’s discretion to surrender himself at the police station.
Mr Khan remained at the police station between 1.30 and 2.30 pm and then left with his supporters for carrying out fogging operations in his Assembly constituency.
During the time when the MLA was inside the police station, his supporters raised slogans demanding justice for their MLA. They carried placards showing the picture of the MLA and held banners of “Main Bhi Amanat Hun. Mujhe Giraftaar Karo (I am also Amanat. Arrest me)”. Women supporters, who had also come in large number, chanted slogans in support of the MLA.
The AAP MLA had alleged that the police wanted to arrest him in a false case.
“I requested them to not do so since I am personally involved in the ongoing fogging work in my area but they said they are under pressure. I will be courting arrest at Jamia Nagar police station,” he had said on Saturday.
A case of sexual harassment was registered against Mr Khan last week in southeast Delhi’s Jamia Nagar police station on a complaint by his sister-in-law. A case under IPC Sections 354(A) (sexual harassment), 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation), 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), 120B (punishment of criminal conspiracy), and 498A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) was registered against Amanatullah and the woman’s husband.
