The incident was reported from in front of the victim’s house as his mother and father were waiting on balcony of their residence for arrival of their son from school.
The victim, Aviral, had returned from his play school and was dropped by the school van outside his residence at Railway Colony in Civil Lines. Soon after dropping him, the cab driver rashly took an U-turn and the vehicle hit the boy, said the deceased boy’s father Hitendra Singh Rana.
“I heard a loud noise of the boy’s scream. When I came out of the house, I saw Aviral under the front wheels of the Eeco van. He was motionless. His father, who standing on the balcony on first floor, rushed down to rescue Aviral. The cab driver and his father took out the boy from under the wheels and rushed him to the Parmanand Hospital,” said Sunil Kumar, a resident of the locality.
Recalling the tragic accident, Mr Rana, a technician in Northern Railway, said, “I was standing on my house’s balcony on first floor and his mother was on stairs. We have lost our son in front of our eyes.” He said they had just hired the cab to pick up and drop off their son on school’s reference a month ago. The neighbours said after the accident, the driver himself took the boy to the hospital along with his father. Some people also thrashed him, but he apologised, repeatedly, said the neighbours. Deputy commissioner of police (north) Madhur Verma said a case under Section 279 and 304A of the Indian Penal Code has been filed at the Civil Lines police station. “The accused is identified as Rahul. No previous record of any accident by him has been found,” Mr Verma said.
