In an attempt to widen its influence in Jawaharhal Nehru University, which has always been a Left-bastion, an RSS-backed organisation, Vishwagram, is organising a two-day-long symposium on Kashmir. The event is likely to be attended by J&K chief minister Mehbooba Mufti.
The event, beginning on July 29, comes after the turbulent “nationalism” controversy in the university and is being organised at a time when Kashmir is witnessing unrest and violent protests over the killing of a Hizbul Mujahideen militant Burhan Wani and both the PDP-BJP and Modi government are facing ire over “mishandling of the situation” in the Valley. The RSS had expressed satisfaction with the Centre’s stand against “anti-national activities of some” in the Valley after a united Opposition had attacked the Modi government over “failing to distinct between militants and common man.”
“Yes, we have invited Ms Mehbooba Mufti. There will also be national and international scholars participating in the event,” said Ms Gita Singh, president of Vishwagram.
The venue of the event is country’s premiere educational institution, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). The two-day-long symposium will see vice-chancellors from across the country, intellectuals, experts, social workers, “nationalists” and Muslim scholars discussing on “Peace, People and Possibilities in Kashmir”. Senior RSS leader Indresh Kumar is the chief patron of this organisation.
