A 28-year-old Jamia Millia Islamia dental graduate committed suicide at a friend’s residence in Jamia Nagar, southeast Delhi, on Tuesday night after allegedly being asked to vacate her hostel room over failure to pay fees.
However, Jamia administration denied the allegation on Thursday and said, so far, it had not put up a list of fees defaulters on the notice board.
No suicide note was recovered from the possession of the student, identified as Hina Peakar, but her friends claimed that she was depressed after being asked to vacate her hostel room.
Hina, from Sambhal in Uttar Pradesh, had completed her BDS degree from Jamia Millia Islamia but was pursuing an one-and-a-half month course related to her professional degree.
“For the same, she wanted to extend her stay in the hostel. After the hostel authority approved her stay, she was unable to pay the hostel fees. So, the administration department had asked her to vacate the hostel,” sources said.
Since last week, Hina had been living at her friend’s residence in Jamia Nagar. Her friend Gulzar Ahmad Zaidi told the police she was depressed due to this reason and on Tuesday night, he found her hanging from the ceiling fan. She was declared dead at hospital. Official privy to probe said the exact reason for Hina’s suicide was yet to be ascertained.
Denying Zaidi’s claim, the Jamia authorities said Hina had applied for leave on July 15 to visit her local guardians in Okhla. The authorities said there was no question that she could not afford the hostel fees for the July-December period as the she was getting almost the same amount as a stipend every month.
