A married man has been arrested from North Delhi in a case of cheating a divorced woman, with police claiming that the accused was also in touch with 30 other women whom he befriended on matrimonial sites posing as a divorcee.

Accused Manish Gupta, 36, who is a resident of Rohini, was arrested by the police on the basis of a case registered at Ashok Nagar police station on a complaint of a divorced woman whom he had cheated last week, said Milind Dumbere, DCP (Northwest). The woman in her complaint told the police that she was a divorcee and was searching a matrimonial site for a suitable match for her where she got in touch with Manish, who introduced himself as a divorced businessman with Rs 1 crore annual income. The accused also attracted the complainant claiming to be a management graduate and alumni of a prestigious Delhi University college. He also made the woman to believe in a happy future with him.

After winning her confidence, he asked the woman to deposit money in his accounts claiming that he had lost his wallet containing his credit card and a diamond ring. The woman, believing that she was helping her “future husband,” deposited Rs 50,000 and Rs 25,000 on two occasions in June this year. He, however, ended all contacts with the complainant after duping her.

Many divorced women and widows had fallen in the trap of accused who who used to pose himself as divorcee on matrimonial sites and then extort money from them on one or other pretext. During the scrutiny of the accused’s bank statement, it has been revealed that he had cheated other victims also on the pretext of marrying them.

It has been found that he got his profile registered in three different matrimonial sites. The data of his mobile phone was also scrutinised.
