A 45-year-old woman was allegedly pushed to death her estranged husband from balcony of her house in East Delhi’s Kalyanpuri in the early hours of Sunday.
The woman’s 11-year-old grandson, a witness to the murder, tried his best to save his grandmother, but was pushed away by the alleged killer.
The accused, Dilip Kumar, works for a transport company in Delhi. He has been on the run ever since the murder. The police suspects he has escaped from Delhi in one of the several trucks owned by his employer.
Kumar lived with his 45-year-old wife, Lalita, until six months ago when he abandoned her following frequent quarrels over monetary issues. Lalita had then moved in with her daughter’s family in East Delhi’s Khichripur village.
The accused, however, visited his wife around 8 pm on Saturday and requested that he be allowed to rest in the house for a while. Lalita’s daughter and son-in-law were not at home at that time and she was alone with her two grandsons.
“My grandmother refused to allow my grandfather into the house. That started a quarrel between them. It turned so loud that my younger brother ran into the other room out of fear,” alleged the 11-year-old boy who decided to stay by his grandmother through the quarrel.
The fight between the couple continued for the next few hours during which Kumar allegedly assaulted Lalita despite the boy’s intervention.
The fight continued until midnight when Kumar allegedly dragged Lalita to the balcony on the second floor of the building. Her grandson tried to prevent the abuse, but was pushed away by Kumar, who threatened to kill him too if he intervened.
“Amidst the assault in the balcony, the accused suddenly grabbed Lalita by her hair and threw her off the balcony. The terrified boy ran downstairs to check on his grandmother, but she was bleeding and unconscious,” said a police officer.
Neighbours informed the police and the victim was rushed to a hospital where she was admitted into the intensive care unit (ICU). She succumbed to her injuries on Monday.
A case of murder was subsequently registered at the Kalyanpuri police station. The police has recovered some CCTV footage near the crime spot.
