A two-and-half-year-old girl was allegedly murdered by a rickshawpuller, who hit her head against the floor of a temple in West Delhi’s Ranhola area on Monday, claiming that the child was “possessed by spirits.”

The accused, identified as Amit Kumar (28), allegedly kidnapped the girl from her home around 11.15 am on Monday and took her to a temple 100 metres away from her home where he allegedly hit her against the floor injuring her grievously, said a senior police officer. “From whatever little the accused has told us in questioning, it looks like he is mentally sick,” said the police.

“The accused hasn’t spoken much during questioning. But he has claimed that he can see ghosts and understand their language. He is claiming that he felt that the girl was possessed and he hit her against the floor in order to rid her of negative spirits,” said a senior police officer.

In another incident, a five-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a 32-year-old neighbour who kidnapped her while she was playing outside her home in Northwest Delhi on Monday.

The incident was reported on Sunday evening when the girl was playing while her mother was inside their home in Haiderpur village, said a senior police officer.

When the mother came out to check on her daughter, she couldn’t find her. She was told by a passerby that a girl was found lying in the nearby bushes, the police said.
