A 51-year-old businessman escaped unhurt when a group of unidentified men opened fire at his car in northwest Delhi’s Netaji Subhas Place area on Wednesday.
Initial investigations suggest that Ajit Gupta, a small-time businessman who owns a shop of adhesive tapes, had received a extortion call of Rs 50 lakh in the past but took no action.
The police has not ruled out a possibility of personal enmity or business rivalry in the case.
According to the police, Mr Gupta was driving his Maruti Swift car towards his shop near D-Mall in Netaji Subhas Place when he heard a gun shot.
A bullet shattered the car’s window and missed him narrowly. The police has registered a case under attempt to murder and Arms Act at the Netaji Subhas Place police station against unknown persons.
The police said that it had got a PCR call at around 1.40 pm that a man’s car was attacked. One round was fired in which the bullet struck Mr Gupta’s vehicle. As per the complainant, Anil Gupta, he could not see who fired at him since the culprits fired at him from behind the car.
By the time Mr Gupta stopped his car to make sense of what had transpired, the group of men fled from the scene.
The police is scanning the CCTV footage of the area to establish the identity of the culprits.
“We have registered a case under Section 307 (attempt to murder) and relevant sections of the Arms Act. We have started investigation and probing the matter from all angles,” said Vijay Singh, deputy commissioner of police (Northwest).
“We are questioning him and will also be taking statements of his relatives and friends. Further investigation is underway,” added the officer.
