A 35-year-old business executive was killed after allegedly being hit by a speeding Mercedes car in north Delhi’s Civil Lines area on Monday night.

A 35-year-old business executive was killed after allegedly being hit by a speeding Mercedes car in north Delhi’s Civil Lines area on Monday night.

The victim, Sidharth Sharma, was the marketing head of a private enterprise. The police said that the owner’s son, a minor, was driving the car and it has ascertained the details of the owner. The young boy has been detained. The incident was reported at around 8.45 pm when the victim was crossing the road near Ludlow Castle School, a senior police official said.

Sharma was flung 15 feet into the air and landed at least 20 metres away as the car hit him. Due to the impact of the accident, a tyre of the car burst and it stopped after a sharp drift on the road, the official said.

According to the police, passersby said that the car was being driven at a speed of at least 80 km per hour and that they had seen at least five youth, aged between 20 and 25 years, stepping out of the vehicle after the accident.

As the car came to a halt, all the occupants fled the scene abandoning the vehicle there.

The police was also told that two motorcyclists had a narrow escape from the car seconds before it knocked down Sharma. Sharma was rushed to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, the official said.

Meanwhile, the police has impounded the car and tracked the owner, a businessman who resides in Civil Lines area. The police is also procuring CCTV footage of the area to identify the driver and other passengers in the car.

After interrogating the car owner, the police zeroed in on his son as the owner said he was not driving the car on Monday evening, the official said. A case of rash driving and causing death by negligence has been registered.
