Man held for duping people of over Rs 1 crore

The Delhi police on Saturday arrested an alleged conman who is suspected to have duped people to the tune of over Rs 1 crore on the pretext of government jobs and projects with leading power companies

The Delhi police on Saturday arrested an alleged conman who is suspected to have duped people to the tune of over Rs 1 crore on the pretext of government jobs and projects with leading power companies, pretending to be top official posted at Union home ministry, CBI and BHEL.

The accused, Joy Shaw, who is a qualified mechanical engineer, allegedly cheated a businessman in Delhi to the tune of Rs 85 lakh, promising him a project with power companies, pretending to be a senior IAS officer posted at the MHA, the police said.

On other occasions, he allegedly cheated people of several lakhs promising them jobs, pretending to be a senior IPS officer posted at the Central Bureau of Investigation and at times as a senior engineer at Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited.

Shaw was involved in several cheating cases across Delhi, West Bengal, Orissa and Madhya Pradesh. He was earlier arrested in Kolkata once, the police said.

He used to move around in a sedan with a read beacon. The car purportedly had the “Government of India” text in its registration number plates and a forged sticker pertaining to the MHA on its windshield.

The car, along with several forged documents including identity cards and agreement papers with regard to power companies, were recovered by the police.

Shaw used to meet his targets at prominent hotels in cities. He was tracked by the police with the help of documents which he had produced at the hotels and verifying the same with all leading offices, where he claimed to be an employee of, the police said.
