Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly Vijender Gupta on Thursday demanded that Metro fares should be reduced to half and travel by DTC buses should be made free during the 15-day odd-even road rationing scheme.
“The road rationing scheme is being introduced again by the Kejriwal government without making adequate preparations and alternative transportation arrangements. These relaxations are essential to encourage the mass usage of public transport and provide to relief to general public. People will use of mass transportation facility leading to decline in traffic on roads,” Mr Gupta said.
“Parents are worried as only schoolchildren in uniforms are exempted from the scheme. The government has not taken care of the parents while coming back after dropping their children to school or going to school to pick them up. The parents are scared of being prosecuted by the traffic police and other law-implementing agencies,” the BJP MLA said, adding that he has requested the AAP government to find a solution to these problems.
“Experts from IIT-Delhi found that the odd-even scheme provided relief neither from pollution nor from traffic jams. Rather, it led to traffic jams from 6-8 in the morning. It was found by the experts that the number of buses, autorickshaws and two-wheelers recorded a high turnout, leading to growth in pollution. Besides IIT-Delhi, Delhi Pollution Control Committee, Air Pollution Control Committee, School of Planning and Architecture and the Institute of Transport Research and Accident Prevention Programme also found the scheme to be a failure.”
