Major fire in godown, 2 injured in Jahangirpuri

Two people sustained severe injuries in two major fire incidents in the capital in the past 24-hours.

Two people sustained severe injuries in two major fire incidents in the capital in the past 24-hours. In the first incident, the fire broke out at a godown in Northwest Delhi’s Jahangirpuri at around 1.40 am, following which four fire tenders were rushed there and a rescue operation was conducted, said a fire official.

Two of the workers, identified as Dinesh, 40 and Jatin, 25, fainted after they were severely choked by the smoke. They received severe burn injuries and are presently recovering at LNJP Hospital here, the fire official said.

It took around four-and-a-half hours for the firefighters to douse the flames, the official added. However, no casualties were reported in this case. In the second incident, a major fire broke out at a medicine godown in Mandoli village of Harsh Vihar in Northeast Delhi following which 26 fire tenders were rushed to the spot. No casualties were reported in the incident which took place at around 8.30 am, said a police official, adding that the fire is suspected to have originated from a short circuit. The flames were doused at about 12.45 pm.

It took four hours for the firefighters to douse the flames, following which a cooling operation was launched, a fire official said.

In the first case, the godown owner alleged that the fire tenders reached the spot about an hour after the first call was made. “The major loss of property which has been caused in the incident could have been prevented had the fire tenders reached the spot on time,” said a relative of the godown owner.

The fire officials, on the other hand, claimed that they took time as the godown was situated in a populated colony and the streets were too narrow. Cases in both incidents have been registered and further investigations are on.
