A major fire broke out in a forested area behind Rajghat in central Delhi on Thursday morning, but no casualties were reported. However, at least 30 persons were injured, with 15 of them sustaining severe burn injuries, in Outer Delhi’s Buddh Vihar area after a fire broke out in a scrap godown on Thursday afternoon. Two other incidents of fire were reported in the city on the same day.
The fire in Buddh Vihar took firefighters with six fire tenders over two hours to douse the flames, following which a cooling operation was launched, a fire official said, adding that the fire broke out in the godown at 2.20 pm.
Several persons sustained injuries and were admitted to Safdarjung Hospital for treatment. The cause of the fire hasn’t been ascertained as yet. The fire became worse after a gas cylinder exploded and many persons, who had either gathered around or were passing by, suffered injuries.
As many as 10 fire tenders were rushed to the forested area behind Rajghat to contain the fire at around 10.40 am and the operation lasted for hours, but no casualties were reported.
“We received a call about the fire and were told that the fire was major and we immediately sent 10 fire tenders to the spot,” said a fire department official, adding that “we informed the local police as well who swung to action.”
“We reached the spot and secured the place so that no one suffered due to the fire,” a police officer said.
“The fire could have been caused by hot and dry weather conditions. However, the exact cause can be known after an assessment following the cooling operation. The matter is being investigated from all angles,” fire and police officials said.
In another incident, a fire broke out at the Bhalswa landfill site used for dumping garbage by the North Delhi Municipal Corporation.
No casualties were reported in the incident at around 7.30 am. Three fire tenders were rushed to the spot.
A minor fire took place at Lady Hardinge Medical College at around 12.30 pm and the reason of the fire is suspected to be a short circuit in an AC and five fire tenders were rushed there.
