Dial — the operator of the New Delhi IGI Airport — -announced on Friday that “preventive repairs” would start at the main (first) runway (10-28) of the Delhi airport from April 5 for about a week rendering that runway closed for that period of time but that both the secondary runways (09-27) and third runway (11-29) would be “fully available to handle the air traffic”. In the wake of speculation on whether the number of aircraft movements would be cut down as a result, DIAL sources asserted that this would not be so and that the full number of aircraft movements would be maintained. “There could be some minor delays but no major disruption,” sources said.

“The Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), managed by Delhi International Airport (P) Limited (Dial), a GMR-led Consortium, is set to undertake some necessary and preventive repair works on Runway 10/28. Starting 5th April, 2016, the preventive repair exercise is expected to be completed within seven days.

Periodic repair work is crucial to ensure the lifespan of the runway. During the seven days, repair work on the top layer of the runway in certain areas is being executed. In close collaboration with the stakeholders, DGCA, ATC and the airlines, it was decided to carry out the work in one stretch over a period of seven days instead of a piecemeal approach over a few months. This exercise will ensure the best and long lasting quality of the runway. During the closure of runway 10/28 over the seven days, runways 09/27 and 11/29 will be fully available on a 24X7 basis to handle the traffic. These two runways would be sufficient to take care of the current need of air traffic movement. Once the repair works of runway 10/28 is completed and it becomes operational, the airside efficiency of IGI Airport will further improve,” DIAL said, in a statement.
