Wants greater presence of women in PCRs and streets

Amidst growing concern over rising incidents of crime against women in the capital, lieutenant-governor Najeeb Jung on Tuesday directed the Delhi police to ensure greater presence of women personnel in PCRs and streets.

The directive came after the lieutenant-governor convened a meeting with various NGOs and women’s groups to discuss measures for enhanced safety and security of women in the city. “The L-G announced that the women workforce in PCR vans shall be increased to 500 in the coming days so that there is greater presence of women police personnel on the streets,” a senior Raj Bhavan official said.

It was also decided by Mr Jung that the issues raised by women’s groups shall be segregated according to the implementing agency, together with deciding on long-term and short-term goals to be achieved and timelines set. The L-G would then hold a review within two months to assess the progress made on decisions taken.

Urging all concerned to work towards the common cause of a gender-just Delhi, Mr Jung noted: “Safety and security of women are necessary conditions for their greater participation in public life.”

During the meet, a short presentation was made by special CP (operation and PCR) Sundari Nanda on the various initiatives taken by the police. These include an exclusive women’s helpline number 1091; an anti-stalking service for women, “Himmat” mobile safety app for women, the Himmat Whatsapp group, the Hike group and Facebook page for feedback; deployment of PCR vans at vulnerable spots; all 161 police stations with separate women help-desks, run by women officers; and self-defence training being imparted to girls, apart from several other initiatives.
