A 26-year-old Kenyan woman, who was confined illegally by two African nationals, has been rescued by the police from Rajpur Khurd of south Delhi’s Mehrauli on Thursday night following a complaint by a Kenyan embassy official.
A complaint was lodged at Mehrauli police station by Frederick Ndegwa, political counsellor from Kenya embassy, on the intervening night of July 17-18, about the illegal confinement of the Kenyan woman, Gladys Wambui Mwangi (26), in Rajpur extension, said a senior police officer.
The victim was brought to India by her neighbour, Alice Njoki. The police said that Njoki had brought the victim on a false promise of a job as a secretary in China. When she arrived in India, she was confined and her passport was snatched.
However, on arrival in India she was confined and her passport was snatched. According to the police, the victim was asked to join prostitution or she would have to face dire consequences. The victim called her parents in Kenya and also informed the Kenyan embassy about her plight.
The location where the woman was reportedly kept was identified by the police as a house in Rajpur Khurd extension and rescued her in a raid, said the officer.
The police has registered a FIR against the duo under relevant section of IPC for trafficking, wrongful confinement and attempt to murder. The police was able to trace the woman after they put her number on surveillance. She was traced to Rajpur Khurd Extension. Following the information, the police rescued the woman.
The accused woman from Kenya, Alice Njoki, was arrested while another accused, Classidy Jeremiah from Nigeria, managed to run away during the raid.
