A second year student of Jawaharlal Nehru University has been arrested for allegedly raping a classmate in his hostel room on the campus almost six months ago.

The arrest was made on May 20 after the female student approached the police and filed a complaint.

According to the police, the incident happened in December when the accused, identified as Udeept, sexually assaulted the 30-year-old victim in the room allotted to him in the varsity’s Lohit Hostel.

The victim, who herself lives in a hostel on the campus, had gone to the accused’s hostel room to attend a party with a group of fellow students.

At least eight people other had attended the party in the accused’s room before leaving. In her complaint, the victim alleged that the girlfriend of the accused was also among the students who had attended the party before she was sexually assaulted.

The accused and his girlfriend, the victim claimed, were responsible for making her drink copious amounts of alcohol, which is why she was not in her senses. “After everyone left, the accused raped the girl who was intoxicated. When she woke up the next morning, she realised that she had been sexually assaulted, she told us in her statement,” said a senior police officer.

The victim finally approached the police on May 19 and narrated her ordeal. A case under Section 376 (rape) was registered against the accused at Vasant Kunj (North) police station. A police team then arrested the accused who was handed over to them by the varsity security personnel.

On the delay in the lodging a police complaint, the woman told the police she was initially in two minds whether to file a complaint or not as she feared the matter would go public.
