JNU row: Lawyer arrested for assault granted bail

The Delhi police on Saturday arrested Om Sharma, one of the lawyers who was allegedly involved in thrashing students and journalists at the Patiala House courts complex, four days after issuing summon

The Delhi police on Saturday arrested Om Sharma, one of the lawyers who was allegedly involved in thrashing students and journalists at the Patiala House courts complex, four days after issuing summons to him. Mr Sharma was soon released on bail after being arrested by the Delhi police.

New Delhi DCP Jatin Narwal said that Mr Sharma was arrested under Sections 147, 149, 323 and 427 of IPC.

“Mr Sharma was asked to join the investigation four times. On Saturday, he joined the investigation at Tilak Marg police station. After interrogation, he was arrested by the police. We released him later on bail as per law,” said the DCP.

Even as Mr Sharma on Saturday joined the investigation, the other two lawyers, Vikram Singh Chauhan and Yashpal Singh, are yet to respond to police summons.

The Delhi police had issued notice against Mr Chauhan, Mr Singh and Mr Sharma thrice. A senior police official said that they are taking legal opinion in this respect and were mulling to approach to an NBW issued against the remaining two lawyers who did not appear before the police for the fourth consecutive day.

“We have issued them three notices but Mr Chauhan and Mr Singh are taking things lightly. In such case, to arrest them, we will have to approach the court to get an NBW issued against them,” the police official said.

Vikram Singh Chauhan was reportedly leading the attack on journalists, JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar and other students at Patiala House courts. In some of the pictures, he was clearly seen beating JNU students. Mr Chauhan has also posted several posts against Umar Khalid and Kanhaiya on his social media account. He has called lawyers to assemble at the Patiala House courts complex to assault JNU students.

Though he was criticised for the attack on journalists, he was felicitated by another group of lawyers.
