The Delhi police has filed three separate chargesheets relating to the brazen attacks on scribes and others at the Patiala House courts premises allegedly by a group of lawyers and others when JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar was produced in an alleged sedition case. While the first chargesheet names advocates Vikram Chauhan, Yashpal Singh and Om Sharma as accused, the second has been filed against BJP MLA O.P. Sharma.
The third chargesheet was filed against advocates Chauhan and Singh.
The three lawyers have been chargesheeted for the alleged offences under Sections 147 (rioting), 149 (offence committed by unlawful Assembly), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of IPC.
The BJP leader has been chargesheeted for alleged offences under Sections 323, 341 (wrongful restraint of any person) and 506 of IPC.
Four separate FIRs were lodged by the Delhi police in connection with the violence at the Patiala House courts premises on February 15 and 17 respectively.
A group of lawyers had allegedly attacked journalists, students and teachers of JNU and unidentified people in and outside the court, dubbing them as anti-nationals in the wake of a raging row over the arrest of Kanhaiya.
The violence broke out when Kanhaiya, against whom a sedition case was filed, was to be brought before a court for remand proceedings.
According to the sources, the chargesheet said that the violence was planned and the perpetrators had provoked the mob to go on a rampage.
It mentions names of several witnesses, including security guards, lawyers and scribes, who were reportedly present when lawyers allegedly assaulted JNU students and journalists.
The police has also relied on CCTV footages, including those reportedly showing Kanhaiya being attacked in the court premises and OP Sharma allegedly resorting to violence. The police, however, said that probe into the case was still going on.
The court has fixed the matter for hearing on September 22. “The three lawyers had formed unlawful assembly with their common objective to attack Kanhaiya using criminal force and threatened journalists and even destroyed their personal property,” the chargesheet said.
