The Jawaharlal Nehru University has suspended the vice-president of its teachers’ association over allegations of financial irregularities.
Ashish Agnihotri, an associate professor in JNU’s Centre for French and Francophone Studies, was suspended by the university on Tuesday. According to an order issued by the JNU administration, Mr Agnihotri has been placed under “immediate suspension”. “This has the approval of the Competent Authority,” the suspension order said.
However, the university administration didn’t specify the period for which the professor has been suspended. Sources said the university had received complaints of financial irregularities and fraudulent dealings in claiming the leave travel concession. Mr Agnihotri couldn’t be reached for his comment. Earlier in this matter, representations were sent to the Union human resource development ministry, demanding an inquiry against him. But the university authorities remained tight-lipped on whether the decision to suspend the professor was taken after investigation by any committee or is a punitive action.
The ABVP on Wednesday alleged that the professor fraudulently claimed reimbursement for his father’s medical treatment and air ticket.
