The city witnessed traffic snarls due to the Jagannath Yatra procession on Wednesday afternoon, leaving commuters stuck in long tailbacks on several stretches in the city.
Traffic policemen were kept on their toes while dealing with the traffic congestion. They were also using social media platforms to advise commuters to avoid jam-packed stretches.
According to officials from the traffic police control room, most of the traffic calls were received from south Delhi between 2 to 4 pm. Other roads where traffic slowdown was experienced include Netaji Subhash Marg, Red Fort, Daryaganj and ISBT Kashmere Gate.
“We deployed additional traffic policemen on the pre-decided routes of the Jagannath Yatra. The traffic was back to normal after 5 pm when the procession culminated,” said a senior officer with the traffic police department.
In south Delhi, traffic snarls were reported from areas such as Hauz Khas, Green Park and Safdarjung Enclave.
Extra traffic and civil police personnel were deployed in the area to deal with any untoward incidents.
Due to security concerns, the police had also put up barricades at several places and traffic was diverted to other possible routes.
The road leading to Hauz Khas from IIT witnessed a major traffic jam.
