The inmate, identified as Ashwini, was imprisoned in connection with several snatching and theft cases.
On Saturday, he had allegedly swallowed a piece of shattered glass, suspectedly trying to kill himself, for which he had to be rushed to the nearby Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital in west Delhi, said the police.
He was admitted in a ward on the second floor of the hospital and two police constables were deployed there as security.
When the officials went out for a minute or two to talk to a doctor, Ashwini, apparently took a chance and escaped through the window.
He did not land directly on the ground floor, but rather chose a skillful way, using the pipes and other surfaces on the building.
But he hurt his foot in the last jump, due to which he couldn’t flee properly, said the police. By the time he landed on ground, many people had noticed him and the guards at the hospital raised an alarm.
He could hardly step out of the peripheral boundary of the hospital premises before he was arrested again, the police added.
The police said that a case under relevant sections has been filed and senior officers reprimaned the prison staff for showing laxity in ensuring that inmate was within their sight always.
