In a bid to improve the quality of education in its government schools, the Delhi government has identified key areas including providing adequate facilities and good infrastructure in these schools. The government has also planned to install CCTV cameras in classrooms to keep a tab on their functioning and improve the curriculum followed by the schools, among other measures.

Elaborating on the key initiatives taken by the Delhi government this year, Punya Salila Shrivastava, secretary, education, said that last year the education budget witnessed a hike of about 106 per cent over the previous year budget nearly Rs 10,000 crore in the state government to focus on education.

She added that the 1,011 government schools have nearly 15 lakh children. In our government schools, we have 100-150 children sitting in a classroom. “Schools are running in three shifts, means three batches into the same school and sometimes they come to school on alternative basis. So, there are areas where density of population is very high. So, the focus was to improve our infrastructure,” she said.

Ms Shrivastava said that second area which the government is working on is to provide capable and dynamic teachers in schools. “We want to ensure the quality of our teachers and third aspect is improving our curriculum and teaching practice,” she added. She added that the government, by using technology, is constructing about 8,000 classrooms across Delhi schools and is also working on curriculum improvement.
