Hotel MD among six held for NDMC lawyer murder

The Delhi police on Wednesday arrested six persons, including managing director of a prominent city hotel, in connection with the murder of the New Delhi Municipal Corporation’s legal adviser.

The Delhi police on Wednesday arrested six persons, including managing director of a prominent city hotel, in connection with the murder of the New Delhi Municipal Corporation’s legal adviser.

The victim, M.M. Khan, 57, assistant legal adviser with the NDMC, was shot dead at a crowded street in southeast Delhi’s Jamia Nagar on Monday evening. He was shot from a close range on chest and doctors at a nearby hospital declared him dead on arrival. Apart from the hotel owner, Ramesh Kakkar, those detained include his personal security officer and four contract killers, who allegedly murdered Khan. P. Kamraj, Special CP, said the lawyer was murdered as he was probing files of hotels sealed for non-payment of taxes and other dues. He said the hotel owner had hired the alleged contract killers, with the help of his private PSO, for '2 lakhs to kill the lawyer. Kakkar, who had been allegedly putting pressure on Khan to waive off penalty worth hundreds of crores due to the NDMC, apparently knew the decision would not go in his favour and conspired to eliminate the lawyer. Khan’s relatives had told the police that he had been receiving calls from unknown people during odd hours of the day.

Meanwhile, 10 days before Mr Khan was shot dead, its vice-chairman Karan Singh Tanwar had written to L-G Najeeb Jung, demanding his replacement, alleging that his “illegal” and “biased” handling of a case was causing loss to the civic body.

The case in point was that of a group of hotels, including The Connaught, and the deceased, Mohammed Moin Khan, a lawyer and the NDMC’s assistant legal adviser, was supposed to pass the final order on the property’s lease terms on May 17.
