The British School in Chanakyapuri area of New Delhi was locked down for over an hour on Thursday afternoon following a threat call warning of an attack with an AK-47 gun.
At least three Delhi police teams swarmed the entire school in Chanakyapuri’s diplomatic area and searched the premises for an hour.
“The school authorities informed us about receiving a call at around 1 pm. The caller claimed he was armed with an AK-47 and threatened to kill all students,” deputy commissioner of police, New Delhi, Jatin Narwal said.
“Several police teams we-re rushed to the school and its entry and exit points were closed. A thorough search was conducted in all the classrooms, washrooms and storerooms for an ho-ur. It turned out to be a ho-ax call,” Mr Narwal added.
Although no case has been registered in this regard so far, efforts are on to trace the caller and probe is underway, said the police. “We safely sent all the students back home after the police informed us it was a hoax call and there was no threat. The campus is secure and everybody is home. All the security protocols are in place at the school,” a senior British School official said.
In a message sent to all parents, the school authorities said: “The school was under lockdown for the last one hour. The police have given an ‘all clear” and all students and staff are safe. The students were moved out in a safe and controlled manner, after-school activities are cancelled. Buses will be delayed by 10-15 minutes.”
The police said that it has called for details of the telephone number from which the call was made and the caller would be nabbed soon. “Strict action will be taken against the caller after his identification,” added the investigating official.
