A Haryana police inspector, who went missing under mysterious circumstances on Thursday, was allegedly taken hostage by four persons who later dumped him in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, after robbing him of two mobile phones, cash and Swift Dzire car, the Gurgaon police said on Friday.

Surender Phogat, SHO of the Gurgaon Sector 29 police station, left for an official meeting in his private car on Thursday around 12.30 pm. The Gurgaon police started getting alarmed after Mr Phogat did not reach for the meeting with commissioner Navdeep Singh Virk on time. His two mobile phones were also switched off.

Gurgaon deputy commissioner of police Deepak Saharan said Mr Phogat was on his way to the DCP East’s office for some official work when he noticed four suspicious-looking men standing along the road. He stopped his vehicle and questioned them.

“One of the men started to run. Phogat immediately got hold of two others, whereupon the third person called back the man who had run away,” Mr Saharan said.

As the four failed to give any satisfactory answers, Mr Phogat made all of them sit in his car to take them to the police station. The four accused overpowered him as soon as he started the car and took him hostage, Mr Saharan said. Thereafter, the inspector was held captive for many hours and taken to some place near Kosi in Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh where he was dumped late in the night after snatching his official and personal mobile phones, cash and car, he said.

Mr Phogat, who received minor injuries, informed his senior officials about the incident, Mr Saharan said. A case has been registered against unidentified persons in Sushant Lok police station, the DCP said.
